McArthur Island Loop

October 26, 2016 by Hike Kamloops Leave a Comment

Trail Name: McArthur Island Loop
Distance: 3.1 km or 2.3 km
Time: 1 – 2 hrs
Difficulty: Easiest
Cell Service: Yes
Trail: Paved sidewalk the entire length
Highlight: Lovely park walk, great for the family (FYI NO DOGS ALLOWED)

To get there: From downtown Kamloops, head across the Overlander Bridge and take the Tranquille Rd exit. Continue on Tranquille until you reach the stoplights at Yew St. Turn left on Yew and continue onto MacKenzie Ave. Continue until you see the sign for McArthur Island. We parked in the large parking lot in front of the McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre (as it is the biggest and likely least busy – especially in the summer!) Or get the directions here.

Park in the large lot near the Sports Centre. From here, the trail is across the road on the inside perimeter of the island. You can head in either direction around the loop. On the far side of the island, you’ll reach the McArthur Island Golf Course, here you have the choice to do the longer or shorter loop. The longer loop passes behind the golf course and the shorter one passes in front of it. The longer loop is only 800 m longer and has nicer views! We highly recommend the longer loop!

This trail is one of the easiest we’ve explored. The McArthur Island loop is great for everyone! It’s the perfect length, with many interesting things to check out (like the butterfly garden, outdoor exercise equipment, children’s playground, or skatepark). Unfortunately, this trail is not dog friendly, so please leave your furry friends at home this time. But if you’re lucky, you might get to see the marmots that live in the rocks on the river side of the island!
