Trail Name: Kamloops Balancing Rock
Time: 0.5 hrs
Cell Service: Yes
Trail Conditions: Easy, single track trail through a cow field beside a small canyon.
Highlights: A large multi-ton boulder sitting atop a clay hoodoo overlooking Kamloops Lake!
To get there: Proceed on Highway 1 towards Vancouver/Cache Creek. After making your way out of town, take exit 362 towards Cache Creek and continue for about 27kms. On your way you will pass Tobiano Golf Course. You’ll know you’re getting close when you pass the Kamloops Lake View Point. The turn off is 1.5kms past the viewpoint. While driving keep an eye out to your right, and you might catch a glimpse of the Balancing Rock! Also keep your eye out for the gate, and a tall white marker on your right. This is where you will turn in and park. Make sure you’re going slow as its a tight turn off and is easy to miss! Or get directions from Google Maps here.
Park in the small grassy area just off the highway. There is only room for maybe three cars at a time, so be aware of that if planning a trip during a busy time of year or long weekend. From the parking area, squeeze through the gate and follow the dirt path you see straight ahead of you. Follow the trail until you see the Balancing Rock! Please be respectful of the cattle grazing in this area.
This trail is very easy up until you reach the rock itself. If you want to get closer to the hoodoo, or scramble around it for a better view, please be careful as the hills are very steep and made up of loose gravel. This trail is not suitable for dogs as there is a lot of little cacti in the area. Please respect this natural formation and the land it is on. This is privately owned land but the owners have graciously permitted access to hikers who want to view the hoodoo.
